Christmas in Tokyo: what to expect, and who to spend it with

Christmas in Tokyo looks familiar: lights, trees, music in every shop. But it works very differently from Christmas back home, and if you're new, it can sneak up on you. Here's what to expect, and how to make sure you have people to spend it with.

How Christmas works in Japan

It's a normal working day

December 25 isn't a public holiday. Offices, schools and shops run as usual. If you want time off, book it.

Christmas Eve is date night

For many people in Japan, the 24th is a romantic evening for couples: dinner out, a walk under the lights. Restaurants book up fast.

Fried chicken and cake

A Christmas meal of fried chicken is a real tradition here, often ordered weeks ahead, along with a strawberry shortcake "Christmas cake".

New Year is the family holiday

The big time for family and going home is New Year, roughly December 29 to January 3. Many places close then, not at Christmas.

Things to do with friends

  1. An illumination walk. Marunouchi, Roppongi, Omotesando, Ebisu Garden Place and Tokyo Midtown are popular. Most run from November into December; check this year's dates.
  2. A Christmas market. German-style markets with mulled wine and sausages pop up in a few spots around the city each year.
  3. A small dinner or potluck. Book a table for four at an izakaya, or cook together. Ordering the classic fried chicken as a group is a fun way to try the local tradition.
  4. Friendsmas on the 23rd or 25th. Skip the Christmas Eve crowds and do your get-together on a different night.
  5. Plan New Year too. If your friends go home for New Year, the city gets quiet. Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the year) is a great plan with someone else who's staying.

Not sure who you'll spend it with yet?
